The Couture Bed frame is made completely by hand. Precision tools for cutting are utilized throughout the process.
A finer grade of pine, a softwood, for the bed stock is chosen. Finding pine with a tighter grain with small knots is important for the look and scale of the bed. The use of pine requires a more "deft" handling of the wood because it is "softer".
Boards are laid out...matched for grain...glued and bar clamped. These boards are planed for absolute smoothness and planed to remove small fractions of wood to achieve the "in scale" thickness needed for the head and foot boards.
They are then
cut to length and, with applied patterns on top, these cut into their curved shapes. Posts are cut from stock lumber in full lengths on the table saw and run through the planer to achieve the "in scale" desired thickness, producing a pristine finish.
Eventually, these lengths are cut again to the exact dimensions needed as posts for the bed. The side rails are prepared in the same process.
With all pieces having been cut, assembly with joinery and glue produces a frame that is clamped in position and allowed to set. A solid dust board is inserted into the rails with a "dado" for the mattress.
Hand sanding of all edges is required and constant checking for square-ness at all points is maintained throughout the process.
Mortise and tenon joinery is used in the rail- to- post and head and foot- board- to- post assembly to give the frame the finest construction for stability and longevity. The appliqués are applied to the headboard and post finials are drilled and doweled to the posts.
The bed is then branded with a burn mark on the lower back headboard and is finish sanded and waxed with a clear finish or sealed with an oil that allows the wood to turn over time naturally.
Each bed is numbered and dated. Click here to order now.
